National designation recognizes Downtown Marion’s commitment to preservation-based economic development, community revitalization, and measurable local impact.

Downtown Marion, Inc. has been designated as a 2026 Affiliate Main Street America program, a national recognition of the organization’s commitment to preservation-based economic development, community revitalization, and meaningful improvements in Historic Downtown Marion.

The designation places Downtown Marion, Inc. among 453 Affiliate Main Street America organizations nationwide and connects Marion to a network of more than 1,600 communities leading commercial district transformation efforts across the United States.

Each year, Main Street America and its partners announce the roster of designated programs in recognition of their commitment to creating meaningful improvements in their downtowns through the Main Street Approach™. The designation also serves as a signal to community members, civic leaders, decision makers, funders, and partners that a local Main Street program is part of a proven national movement with a 45-year track record of generating economic returns, strengthening communities, and creating lasting impact.

“We are proud to recognize Downtown Marion, Inc. as a 2026 Affiliate Main Street America program for your unwavering commitment to grassroots transformation and the extraordinary abilities of your staff, board of directors, and volunteers to respond to the needs of their community,” said Erin Barnes, President and CEO at Main Street America. “Downtown Marion, Inc. demonstrates a dedication to investing in the people and places that make your downtown district special and contribute to the collective power of the Main Street movement to build vibrant spaces and durable economies.”

Main Street America recognizes two tiers of national designation: Accredited and Affiliate. Affiliate status is the second designation tier. To qualify, communities must demonstrate a strong commitment to the Main Street model and dedication to achieving outcomes in six areas: broad-based community commitment to revitalization; inclusive leadership and organizational capacity; diversified funding and sustainable program operations; strategy-driven programming; preservation-based economic development; and demonstrated impact and results.

Downtown Marion, Inc.’s performance was evaluated through assessments conducted by the organization’s personnel and board of directors, along with Heritage Ohio, which works in partnership with Main Street America to identify local programs that meet rigorous national community evaluation standards.

These standards provide the Main Street America network with a framework for reviewing progress, recognizing strengths, understanding trends, and identifying strategies to move Main Street programs forward.

The recognition follows a year of significant growth for Downtown Marion. In 2025, more than $6.2 million was invested into downtown through private rehabilitation projects and public investment initiatives. The district welcomed seven new businesses, created 43 net new jobs, and maintained downtown housing occupancy that includes 195 residential units.

Community engagement also remained a major driver of success. Downtown Marion, Inc. hosted 22 events that attracted more than 24,000 attendees and generated an estimated economic impact of nearly $492,000. Volunteers contributed 1,359 hours, valued at more than $44,000, in support of beautification, events, and community programming. Combined with a social media reach exceeding 5.8 million people, these accomplishments demonstrate the continued momentum taking place in Historic Downtown Marion.

In 2025, Main Street America programs nationally generated $9.4 billion in local reinvestment, welcomed 6,936 net new businesses, facilitated the creation of 36,549 net new jobs, rehabilitated 10,623 historic buildings, and leveraged 1.8 million volunteer hours. On average, for every dollar a Main Street program spent on operations, $23.13 was reinvested in its downtown district.

“Receiving designation as a 2026 Affiliate Main Street America program is a tremendous honor for Downtown Marion, Inc. and a reflection of the hard work, passion, and dedication of our board members, volunteers, business owners, community partners, and supporters,” said Allen Wilson, Executive Director of Downtown Marion, Inc. “This recognition confirms that Downtown Marion is building momentum through preservation-based economic development, community revitalization, and strategic investment in the heart of our city. Being part of the nationwide Main Street America network connects Marion to a proven movement that is transforming downtowns across the country, and we are proud to continue leading efforts that create economic opportunity, celebrate our historic character, and strengthen community pride for generations to come.”
