Patio Season Isn’t Over in Downtown Marion, Ohio

From breakfast and barbecue to cocktails, wine and frozen custard, downtown’s patios still have plenty of life left.

Summer is moving into its final stretch, but patio season in downtown Marion is far from finished.

Afternoons remain warm, evenings are beginning to cool and outdoor tables continue to offer another way to experience the bars and restaurants throughout the district. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, cocktails, wine and frozen custard can all be enjoyed outside—and many of the locations are close enough to visit during the same afternoon or evening.

The outdoor experience stretches from West Center Street to North and South Main, Huber Street and the businesses surrounding Founders Park. Each patio has its own setting and personality.

Founders Park: Downtown’s Big Community Patio

Founders Park gives downtown something larger than any single restaurant patio: a shared outdoor gathering space at the center of the district.

Located near the corner of Main and Church streets, the half-acre greenspace serves as a meeting point and home for community activities throughout the year. During Third Thursdays, it fills with live music, vendors, children’s activities and food trucks. On other days, it provides a place to meet, relax and spend time outside while visiting the surrounding businesses.

Three nearby businesses—Lazeez Grill, OX-B’s and Whit’s Frozen Custard—have outdoor seating along Church Street facing the park. Other restaurants and bars are only a short walk away.

That makes Founders Park the connective point for downtown’s patio experience. It can be the beginning of an afternoon, a stop between destinations or the place where the evening winds down.

From Breakfast Through Dinner, Take It Outside

A patio day downtown can begin before lunch. Baires serves breakfast and lunch Monday through Friday, with chef and owner Marcela bringing an Argentine influence to familiar American dishes. The restaurant is open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. during the week and returns for Friday dinner from 5 to 8 p.m.

Its outdoor seating gives downtown one of its few daytime patio experiences. It works for breakfast, a weekday lunch or an early start to Friday evening.

Mike’s Deli on Main offers another option for lunch outside. The New York-style deli serves signature and build-your-own sandwiches along with homemade soups, sides and desserts. Its outdoor seating provides a casual spot for enjoying a meal along Main Street.

On South Main Street, 101 Smokehouse on Main brings slow-smoked barbecue to the outdoor dining lineup. The restaurant serves smoked meats, hearty sides and rotating barbecue specials in a relaxed, family-friendly setting.

Barbecue fits naturally with patio dining. The outdoor seating offers room for a casual family meal, lunch with coworkers or dinner and drinks with friends without losing the laid-back character of the smokehouse.

Across from Founders Park, Lazeez Grill offers a different set of flavors. Its menu includes hummus, falafel, Mediterranean bowls, pita wraps and other quick, fresh options.

The outdoor tables along Church Street look directly toward the park. Diners can have lunch or dinner outside while remaining close to the activity surrounding one of downtown’s primary gathering spaces.

OX-B’s adds wings, chicken sandwiches, wraps, salads, tenders, waffle fries and shareable sides to the same stretch of outdoor dining. Its Church Street seating also faces Founders Park, making it an easy option for families, groups or anyone looking for a casual meal outside.

With Lazeez and OX-B’s located near each other, that corner of downtown offers several different food choices without changing the outdoor setting.

On North Main Street, Taco Central Sports Bar has one of downtown’s largest and most recognizable patios. Blue shade sails, custom murals and room for groups give the patio its own identity.

The menu combines Mexican staples with American sports-bar favorites, including street tacos, queso, wings and shareable appetizers. House margaritas, draft beer and cocktails make it a natural gathering place later in the day.

Taco Central’s patio can carry the energy of the restaurant outside. It works for lunch, dinner, drinks, game day or a group that wants enough space to settle in under the sun or stars.

Cocktails, Wine and Later Nights

Downtown’s outdoor options continue after dinner.

Marion Brewing Company serves a rotating selection of locally brewed beers and seltzers from its taproom across from Founders Park. Guests may bring food from other downtown restaurants, making the brewery’s outdoor seating (shared with Mike's Deli) an easy addition to lunch, dinner or an afternoon downtown.

At 176 S. Main St., Someplace Else Bar offers cocktails, karaoke, live music and later hours than most other downtown establishments. Its large back patio is used for bands and special events, separating it from the streetside patios found elsewhere in the district.

The back-patio setting gives Someplace Else the feel of a destination within the bar. It is an option for people looking to continue the evening after dinner, a show or an earlier stop downtown.

At the north end of Main Street, Shovel City Drinkery combines an upscale cocktail bar with a relaxed patio experience. Located inside the historic Hughs & Cleary building, Shovel City offers original cocktails, more than 350 whiskies, craft beer, wine and charcuterie.

Its patio has developed its own following, with cigars, food trucks and live entertainment regularly joining the drink menu. Sunday patio parties have brought musicians outside for afternoon performances, accompanied by brunch-style cocktails, craft drafts and food trucks.

Shovel City works equally well for a carefully mixed cocktail, a bourbon pour, a cigar or an afternoon of live music outside.

On West Huber Street, Fable Bar & Co. brings a more contemporary cocktail-lounge experience to the patio lineup. Sisters Sophie Johnston and Lily Lloyd opened the women-owned bar in late 2024, building its menu around premium spirits, fresh-squeezed citrus and house-made additions.

The bar’s outdoor space has hosted seasonal patio parties with specialty drinks, food trucks and other activities. Fable also offers nonalcoholic cocktails, giving groups more flexibility when meeting for a drink outside.

Fable’s patio carries the personality of the lounge beyond its doors: social, polished and centered on cocktails created specifically for the bar.

Blend of Seven Winery offers a quieter pace on West Center Street. Its wines range from dry to sweet, with many of its signature blends produced with Ohio grape juice. The tasting room also offers baked goods and hosts workshops, card games, wine-and-canvas nights and other events.

The winery’s streetside outdoor seating gives guests a place to enjoy a glass of wine while taking in the movement along Center Street. It can serve as the main destination or an earlier stop before dinner, a performance or another downtown event.

Together, Someplace Else, Shovel City, Fable and Blend of Seven demonstrate how different one patio evening can feel. The choice can be live music, cocktails, bourbon, wine, karaoke or simply a table outside with friends.

Finish With Whit’s

A downtown patio experience does not have to end with another round of drinks.

Whit's Frozen Custard serves fresh frozen custard in scoops, sundaes, shakes, floats, Whitsers and cookie sandwiches called Whitties. Vanilla and chocolate are always available, joined by a rotating flavor of the week.

Its outdoor seating runs along Church Street across from Founders Park. That makes Whit’s an easy dessert stop after dinner or a destination of its own for families, couples and groups.

Grab a cone or sundae, find a table outside and spend a little more time downtown before heading home.

There is no single route through downtown’s patios. The experience can be a full evening, a quick lunch, one drink after work or dessert outside with the family.

The calendar is edging toward fall, but downtown Marion’s patio tables, back courtyards and streetside seats are still waiting.
