Downtown Marion has been home to Carroll’s Jewelers since 1934. With its rich history, and a sales team with personalities that sparkle like diamonds, one trip to Carroll’s will make you a regular.
Carroll’s Jewelers opened for business at 172 W. Center Street in 1934 when Harold and Althea Carroll bought Spaulding Jewelers from the Spaulding brothers. In July 1971, the Carrolls, who realized that neither of their two sons were interested in going into the family business, took a chance and hired a young accountant (with no passion for accounting) as a sales associate.
When he started, Lowell Thurston, who has owned Carroll’s since 1975, will tell you he didn’t know the difference between a ruby and a garnet. Lowell was raised on his family’s farm in Deshler, Ohio, served his country in the United States Army and graduated from Bowling Green State University with a degree in accounting. Yet, he knew after one week at Carroll’s that he had found his calling.
Although an electrical fire on February 4, 2002 displaced Carroll’s from their original location, they have always remained in downtown Marion. Their home since June 2004 has been at 207 W. Center Street, a remodeled building that once was the home of the annex to Montgomery Ward and then later Kable Fulfillment.
I asked Marianne Brammell, who has worked at Carroll’s since February 1973, what is it about Carroll’s that makes it so special that five of the six employees have been there for more than 19 years?
Marianne smiled and said, “It starts with Lowell. It is his view and perception of what an employee is. He supports us as women, mothers and grandmothers.”
Marianne said they are more like a family and the women she works with —Tammy, Misty, Lisa, Tiffanie and Mary—- are like sisters.
A fixture in downtown Marion since 1943, Carroll’s Jewelers has remained downtown and supports Downtown Marion, Inc. because Lowell firmly believes that a vibrant downtown is the key to a thriving community overall.
