The 2014-2015 Leadership Marion! class discovered that they have a passion for the revitalization of Downtown Marion, and the youth engaged in Marion’s Rushmore Academy, and their jobs program. This passion resulted in a dual focused community service project called, A Taste of Marion.
The class met with several Downtown Marion, Inc. representatives to learn about the focus of the downtown manager and board of directors for the revitalization of the heart of the city. In the process, the 2014/2015 Leadership Marion! class discovered how they could impact the revitalization efforts. Volunteers and a boost of funds proved to be the main areas of need.
Shortly after meeting with Downtown Marion, Inc., Rushmore Academy’s Steve Vanderhoff, Nicolle Wampler, and several bright, enthusiastic students met with the group to discuss the schools dropout recovery program and mission. Despite any preconceived stereotypes, the meeting with the staff and students was nothing short of remarkable. The inspiration and enthusiasm shared was contagious. The students were well-spoken and genuine. Mr. Vanderhoff and Ms. Wampler were sincere and humble when describing Rushmore’s goals and the impact of their jobs program on the students engaged in it.
A Taste of Marion will benefit both groups by raising funds for beautification projects and tools decided on by Downtown Marion, Inc. Students in Rushmore Academy’s jobs program will complete the projects, gaining a paycheck and meaningful hard and soft work skills that they can carry with them into their future careers.
The Leadership Marion! class is excited to offer this opportunity for you to share in their excitement in supporting these two worthwhile organizations.
