Let me tell you about two men who had been bricklayers for many years.
The first was always unhappy, complaining. When asked about his job, he said, “It’s nothing special … I just lay one brick on top of another day after day.”
The second always seemed to walk with a bounce in his step. When asked about his job, he replied, “See that church over there … my great grandfather helped to build that and people still admire his work. That’s what I hope to do. I started out laying the brick for wonderful family homes, and what I’m working on now will be the tallest brick building in the city. It will stand for generations to come.”
What is the difference with these two men? Perspective. All the first one sees is the negative in his job. The second looked deeper and saw the positive impact that his great grandfather had and realized that he was following in those footsteps.
When you look at our Downtown and the entire city in which we live, do you focus simply on the negative? Or do you look deeper and see that there are many great wonderful things about our community?
As we enter a new year, I challenge each of you to do just that … to look deeper, to see the positives … to see that we have a great community with assets that other communities envy. To see there are numerous people who are working hard on many different levels to make things even better throughout the city. I also challenge you to become part of that effort … to become part of building something that will stand for generations to come.
