There is always so much happening here in Downtown Marion.
First, I’d like to thank two Marion County companies for helping us out. Through their Kohl’s Cares program, a group of Kohl’s associates came downtown last Saturday and planted all 13 of the the round flower planters. (I noticed today that some of them could use some water … so if you have a planter near your home or office, please, please, please take those thirsty flowers a drink! Thank you!)
Second, Nucor will be helping us on Saturday, May 18, with some additional flowers for our cement planters, as well as mulch. I’ll get some additional timing information, but please plan to join us that day and help us make Downtown Marion clean & green!
Thanks so much to both companies and their volunteers!
“Oz The Great & Power” is the movie at the Palace tonight (Friday) at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2:30 & 7:30 p.m.
Saturday night, the historic Marion Palace Theatre is proud to present the tight harmonies and universal humor of The Alley Cats. So make plans to revisit the doo-wop era of the 1950s and 60s Saturday night, May 4 at 8 p.m.
Also plan to take in the Grand Opening of the Barlow Art Center this Saturday, May 4, from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. This will be an open air fine art show on the front lawn of the Women’s Club Home on East Center Street. There will be music by Opossum and Friends, the Marionaires, Phoebe House, and the Marion Popcorn Festival queen and court among others. There will be food and community booths by the Camera Club, Whetstone Wood Carvers, Marion Hobby Club and an antique car show. All of this is free and the weather looks to be perfect, so take time out of your Saturday to support this wonderfully new event.
You can still sign up for the Downtown Marion Market set to kick off next Friday, May 10, 4 – 7 p.m. and run through October 11, right here in Downtown Marion along the sidewalks of West Center Street. We’ll have fruits, vegetables, baked goods, flowers, honey, hand-made furniture, scent tarts, crafts, cement garden statues and more. Call me at 740.382.2181 for information … or e-mail email@example.com … please put “market” in the subject line.
Also on the first Friday of most months — June 7, July 5, August 2, and October 4 — Charleston Place will present “Pickin’ on the Porch” from 4 – 7 p.m. This will be a music event featuring local musicians — June 7 will be Southern Gospel with Grail and several other groups. Home-based businesses such as Avon, AdvoCare, Mary Kay, Pampered Chef and the like will also be able to set up on the sidewalks in this area at the regular market prices. Call Nadine, 387-7790, for additional information.
The Marion County Historical Society (MCHS) will be having a Museum and Membership Rummage sale on May 11, Saturday from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. The sale will be held in the auditorium at Heritage Hall and also in the parking lot behind the museum, weather permitting. A Members Only Presale will be held on May 10 from 4-6 pm. Please! Bring your Membership ID for admittance to the presale.
Proceeds from this event will be used to purchase collections preservation supplies and to support the MCHS operating budget. The mission of the Marion County Historical Society is to document the history of Marion County, Ohio by identifying, collecting, and preserving artifacts, records and personal papers of value from Marion County residents, organizations, businesses, and related groups from the prehistoric times to the present. Items included in this sale are donated specifically to be sold for the benefit of MCHS.
Anyone wishing to donate good used items to MCHS for the sale may bring them to Heritage Hall this weekend between 1 and 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 5, or between the hours of 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. on May 6 – 10. Please call 740-387-4255 prior to bringing your items so we can have someone available to help unload your vehicle.
While we are accepting donations of a wide variety of items, we prefer that no clothing be donated. For those unfamiliar with Heritage Hall, it is located on the corner of Church and State Streets with the parking lot on the south side of the building. Call 740-387-4255 for more details.
Next weekend is Mother’s Day and I’ll have a plethora of gift options for you from Downtown Marion next week … from flowers to dinner to jewelery to gift baskets to art and more … it can all be found in Downtown Marion!
As always, where you eat shop and play matters … please do it locally!
